Founded in 1972, the Finnish-Canadian Society is a non-profit friendship society. Our goal is to provide information about Canada and to promote closer ties between Finns and Canadians. The majority of our members are Finns who have an interest in Canada and Canadian culture. Another part of our constituency is made up of Canadians who have moved to Finland or have an interest in Finnish culture. The Finnish-Canadian Society holds its Annual General Meeting once a year. Members are encouraged and invited to participate. The Board of the Society is elected and general decisions on the coming year's activities are made. The Society is a non-profit organization that financially supports its work through membership fees. The Society also receives funding from the Finnish Ministry of Education. The Canadian Embassy in Finland is a premier partner of the Society and supports its activities in a variety of ways. We aim to bring Finns and Canadians closer together. We provide our members and friends the opportunity to learn about each other's culture. The Society is active in organizing presentations about Canada, celebrations such as Canada Day and Little Christmas, and a writing competition for Finnish school children. A bilingual (English/Finnish) newsletter is published twice a year. It contains information about Canada and events past and future, as well as interesting stories written by members or visitors to Finland or Canada. The Finnish-Canadian Society is a member of the Finnish Federation of Friendship Societies. We cooperate, in part, with the Canadian Friends of Finland, the Nordic Association for Canadian Studies, Canadians Living in Finland, and the Finnish-Canadian Trade Association. |
