 Chairman's update

Dwayne Weleschuk2002 is the year of the Society's 30th anniversary. Because of this, we are planning a special event in September to celebrate. Besides uniting Finns and Canadians in a social and cultural setting, the event will significantly enhance our role in the community.

Throughout the Society's history, activities have reflected the composition and interests of its members. In 1972, this group included people with relatives and friends that had moved to Canada in the 1950's, exchange students that had made Canadian friends during their studies, and ice hockey players with an interest in meeting Canadian teams.

Travel and exchanges – culture, sport, music, language and education – have played a major and defining role in the Society throughout its 30-year history. "Exchange" in all its forms is as important today as it was in 1972, and modern society permits more opportunity than was possible 30 years ago. Currently, 4 out of 6 Board Members of the Finnish-Canadian Society are Canadians - evidence that our Society is evolving.

I am grateful to the early visionaries who believed in the mutual benefits of promoting cultural trade in its various forms. Our similarities and cultural offerings should be celebrated every year!
